About the Author
Karen Steede Terry
is a best-selling author, successful entrepreneur, career
management expert, dedicated volunteer and devoted mom. Her
second book Full-Time Woman, Part-Time Career:
Launching a Flexible Business That Fits Your Life, Feeds Your
Family and Fuels Your Brain is the definitive
companion for women who want to earn an independent living
while enjoying everything family life has to offer. As an
expert coach, Karen advises women on how they can use their
existing professional skills to go out on their own and build
a flexible business.
After getting married and moving to a new city without having
a job, Karen struggled with the idea of going back to work
while trying to start a family. Rather than jump back into
the job market, she struck out on her own and launched her
own company. Karen was the first woman to obtain training
certifications from Trimble® Navigation, LTD. and
ESRI®, Inc., the two market leaders in the Global
Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) markets, respectively. In addition, she is certified by
Leica Geosystems and MapInfo® Corporation, making her the
only person simultaneously certified by all four
manufacturers.
For more than a decade, Karen has been building a small
business as a sought after technology consultant and
top-rated software instructor. She also has also applied her
computer skills to disaster assessment and emergency
management. In 1995, Karen used GPS to record key pieces of
evidence and debris during the aftermath of the Oklahoma City
bombing. In 2003, she was asked to assist with the recovery
of the NASA space shuttle Columbia.
Karen's first book, Integrating GIS and the Global
Positioning System, was published in 2000. She is a
member of the National Speakers Association (NSA) and is
regularly invited to speak at GIS and women's
conferences. Her clientele includes Fortune 500 companies,
city and county governments, SBC/Pacific Bell (now AT&T),
Occidental Petroleum, 3D International and The State of
Texas. She was the exclusive GIS/GPS trainer for the State of
Texas for five years.
After teaching her classes, Karen was approached by students
and colleagues for advice on her flexible business model.
Most were young women looking to combine a successful
professional career with motherhood. She discovered a lack of
resources for women who desired to be at home with their
families and pursue their professional interests. Karen
embraced her teaching instincts and set out to provide
guidance and coaching for women looking to start home
businesses. Her efforts culminated in a second book, titled
Full-Time Woman, Part-Time Career, which has
been praised in the media and by industry experts.
